iOS 9 includes a share action for saving PDFs to iBooks

The option is limited, however, as once the PDF is saved to iBooks, the only export options you have are Email and Print. That said, this is still a definite step in the right direction for iOS. Archiving webpages will be much easier as a result, even if iBooks isn’t the most ideal option for storing PDFs.

Not only will users be able to save webpages to PDFs, but the option shows up in first-party apps like Notes and Photos as well. Being that it is a native sharing activity, it would seem likely that third-party apps would gain access to the feature as well.

That is interesting.

Monster gears up for summer with the SuperStar BackFloat waterproof Bluetooth speaker

Monster wants to soundtrack the outdoor life this summer with the announcement of the SuperStar BackFloat waterproof Bluetooth speaker.

The new speaker is housed in a silicon shockproof case and has a relatively short Bluetooth range of 10m.

Source options include Bluetooth and 3.5mm aux-in.

Sound is processed through two bass radiators and two full-range drivers and battery gives a fairly standard seven hours playback.

There are four physical buttons for pairing and playback controls and there’s also a built-in mic for calls.

The BackFloat will launch in two colour options – neon blue and neon green – and will cost $149, which includes a carry case.

ZMF headphones has launched the Blackwood and Vibro headphones, both of which feature hand-crafted wooden earcups made to users’ specs.

These headphones both use the highly-praised Fostex T50RP planar magnetic driver.

A wide range of finish options are available and the Blackwood headphones are made with hard woods for a bright tone, while the vibro mellows the sound with soft wood.

Kawaii! Chord 2Qute DAC released

First announced at CES 2015, the small but powerful Chord 2Qute standalone DAC is just gone on general sale.

This model supports coax, optical and USB, and updates the previous Qute EX with the latest Hugo DAC specifications, including ‘pure’ DAC that uses no amp and distortion levels of 0.0003%. It also operates driver-free on Apple and Android devices and comes with drivers for Windows.

It supports up to 32-bit/384kHz audio via coax and USB, as well as 24-bit/192kHz via optical.

There are plenty of other specs and figures to drool over but keep in mind it’s retailing at £995 (US $1530).

Samsung updates Level On headphones with wireless Bluetooth option

The Samsung Level On headphones will lose their cords in their second incarnation as the new model goes wireless.

The first Level On headphones had a detachable cable and now they’ve gone all the way with the wireless Bluetooth edition.

They feature 40mm drivers and active noise cancellation technology.

Playback is controlled via a touchpad on the side of the unit, which also works to adjust the volume and engage S Voice when used with Samsung Galaxy handsets.

The battery life for wireless use with noise cancelling on is a more than acceptable 11 hours and with just Bluetooth and no noise cancellation it’s just short of a day’s play with 23 hours of battery life promised.

They’ll be available at the end of the month in a choice of black, white, blue and red.

Sony Mobile cuts 1000 workers in Sweden

Sony Mobile has certainly dropped from its previous high atop the smartphone pile and the Japanese manufacturer has announced that almost 1000 of its Swedish workforce will be let go as part of a wider restructuring initiative, which is designed to push the handset maker towards profitability.

The layoffs – at one of Sony’s key manufacturing and R&D centres – consists of 575 staff and 400 contract positions, covering both administrative positions and technical staff. The cuts will mean that Sony’s Swedish workforce will be reduced by almost half, with only 1200 employees remaining in the Scandinavian country.

Earlier this year, the company announced that the handset maker would lay off 2100 employees in its mobile division, bringing the total to around 5000 employees and last week, the company announced that its North West Europe President was also leaving the company as part of the wider restructuring shuffle.

In a statement to TechCrunch, the company confirmed the cuts were part of the wider restructuring efforts:

As part of its ongoing measures to drive transformation into a profitable and sustainable company, Sony Mobile will change its organizational structure effectiveApril 1st, aiming to increase its operational efficiency and transitioning it to a leaner, more agile organization.

In relation to these changes to its organizational structure, Sony Mobile announced today that approximately 1,000 employees and consultants in Lund will be affected by job closures. This number is included in the approximately 2,100 global headcount reduction announced at Sony’s earnings announcement on February 4th, expected to be completed by the end of FY2015. Sony Mobile filed a redundancy notification (“varsel”) with the Swedish authorities today in this regard.

Lund will continue to be an important site for Sony Mobile, with its main focus on software development, and Customer Services.

Sony have been widely reported to consider selling its smartphone division but the company has denied these claims. Earlier this year, Sony vowed to make the division profitable by next year and the company’s latest handset – the Xperia Z4 – was announced last month. The Xperia Z4 may be perfect for Japan but its European variant – which goes under the Xperia Z3+ moniker – is certainly not the flagship smartphone we were all waiting and hoping for.

Whether these improvements and changes are enough remains to be seen, but with the company dropping off the Top 10 global smartphone makers list, the immediate future certainly looks bleak.

Elephone’s Upcoming Flagship Will Bring 4 GB of RAM and QHD Panel

Among the Chinese producers that are constantly releasing new products on the market we also haveElephone, company that is growing each day. This producer has some pretty interesting devices in its portfolio that are priced even below the $200 mark and are packing high-end specs.

A new Elephone smartphone that is expected to be officially announced on June 20th, is Elephone Vowney(not the final name). This one packs a 5.5 inch IPS LCD QHD display, a quad-core Intel processor, 4 GB of RAM memory, a 20.7-megapixel rear camera (Sony IMX230) and a 3.800 mAH battery.

From what we found out, this phone will also get a Mediatek variant with MT6795 processor inside that is clocked at 2.2 GHzand offers eight cores. The novelty however, is represented by the fact that the Intel variant will be available with either Android 5.0 Lollipop on board, either with Windows Mobile 10.

Other specs of the phone include 32 GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot up to 64 GB, A-GPS, fingerprint scanner placed on the back right below the camera and a 8-megapixel front-facing camera. Apparently, this phone will cost just $299.
