HTC ONE (M8) IN THE UK GETS LOLLIPOP UPDATE

Own an HTC One (M8)? Wondering when the Taiwanese phone is planning to roll out the Android 5.0 (Lollipop) update for your smartphone? If so, we ve got good news for. The update is now available for your smartphone. To know if the update is available for your HTC One (M8), all you have to do is go to Settings > Software updates. If Lollipop is available for your smartphone, you ll get a message that asks if you want to download the update or not. As usual, the update is rolling out unlocked variants of the HTC One (M8) first. The build for unlocked versions is labelled 4.16.401.10 and is a hefty 780 MB. So make sure you re connected to a Wi-Fi network (so you don t rack up data charges) and you ve got enough battery life. M8s with O2 are also getting the update. It is a bigger file at 800 MB. ZTE Blade L3 with 5-inch qHD display, Android 5.0 announced

ZTE has announced Blade L3, the company’s latest smartphone in the L series. It has a 5-inch (960 x 540 pixels) display, is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor and runs on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) out of the box. It has a 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. ZTE unveiled the Blade S6 in the S series with a Snapdragon 615 SoC, 4G LTE and a 13MP camera at just US$ 249.99 (Rs. 15,370 approx) recently.

The Blade L3 comes with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage with expansion slot and a 2000mAh battery. It is not clear if the smartphone has dual SIM support.

Huawei wants to offer true value, but that means no 4K displays

Huawei has plans to make itself better known in the UK market by delivering true value to the consumer, but for now, that doesn't include a 4K screen on its future smartphones.
According to Kevin Ho, president of handsets product line at the company, while 4K screens look great on large displays, our eyes are not able to tell the difference on smaller screens.
Ho said it comes down to a compromise between a 4K display and a longer lasting battery and he believes consumers would opt for the latter. A Huawei smartphone with a 4K display isn't completely off the cards in the future, but for now, you won't be seeing one appear.
"You have to spend a lot of power for a 4K display so you have to compromise, but if you choose 2K, it can maybe last all day. I don't want to say there is no chance for 4K on a smartphone but most consumers would choose a smartphone that can last a day," said Ho.
Interestingly, Sony Mobile also believed this was the case when it was asked about 4K displays at the end of 2014 at the launch the Xperia Z3, which offered a Full HD display rather than QuadHD. The rumoured Xperia Z4 is speculated to have adopted a 4K display however.
It doesn't sound like Huawei will give in though. Joonsuh Kim, senior vice president of Huawei's mobile ID team said: "For the moment, we do not care about the number game. There are a lot of companies showing off what they can do. What we are focusing on is how we can deliver the true value to the end consumer. We try to provide compact as much as possible but not just for showing off, our main focus is all about true value."
When asked what it considered as true value, Kim claimed design, usability and a price more affordable than the competition combined, gives you value.

Huawei has a press conference scheduled for 1 March at MWC and while no smartphones are said to be appearing at the show, the company has told Pocket-lint there will be three newwearables and new tablets at the show. We were also told the Ascend P7's successor, the Ascend P8, will be launching in London on 15 April, but no further information was given. Judging by Ho's comments however, it's probably safe to assume there won't be a 4K display.

Xiaomi Mi 4 to Go on Sale Early for Flipkart

Flipkart, Xiaomi’s exclusive online retail partner, has announced that the flagship Mi 4, priced at Rs. 19,999, will be exclusively available on February 10 for the first 2,500 Flipkart First subscribers who register.

The Xiaomi Mi 4 will be automatically added to the cart of the first 2,500 Flipkart First customers who register for the handset’s flash sale on February 10, and registrations kicked off at 6pm IST on Wednesday. The Mi 4 is also going on sale for general public on February 10 [Tuesday] at 2pm IST.

Flipkart in an email to its Flipkart First subscribers titled ‘Early Access to Mi 4′, said, “With Early Access you can now buy our most awaited launches like Mi 4 before anyone else. The first 2,500 Flipkart First subscribers who register to buy will get the Mi4 added to their cart automatically when it is launched.” Notably, the interested Flipkart First subscribers who want early access to the Mi 4 have to register before February 2.

Previously, Flipkart use to offer a new Xiaomi handset “one day prior to its India launch”; though the e-commerce website is offering the Mi 4 to first 2,500 Flipkart First subscribers on the first flash sale day.

“All Flipkart First subscribers who get Early Access on the Mi4 will get an email from Flipkart to confirm their Early Access by February 4,” the email from Flipkart added.

Earlier, Xiaomi Redmi Note and Redmi 1S went on sale to select Flipkart First subscribers 1 day prior to the India launch of the handsets.

Xiaomi on Wednesday launched its 2014 flagship in India at Rs. 19,999 for the 16GB model. The Chinese company also confirmed that the 64GB model will also be rolled out in the Indian market without revealing availability or pricing fine points. Unfortunately, Xiaomi has also not announced the number of units going on sale in the first flash sale.

Xiaomi India Head Manu Kumar Jain but exposed that the Mi 4 units linking 25,000 and 40,000 can be expected to go on sale on February 10.

For specifications, the Mi 4 is certainly an upgrade from the predecessor Xiaomi Mi 3, as it is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz alongside 3GB of RAM. The Mi 4 features a 5-inch full-HD show (1080×1920 pixels) that uses a JDI OGS full lamination show. There is a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing camera on the Xiaomi Mi 4, with both sporting Sony’s stacked CMOS sensors. The smartphone is backed by a 3080mAh Li-ion battery.

Meizu M1 goes official with 5" display

It seems that Meizu is ready to take down the Xiaomi Redmi 2 with its latest M1. The Meizu M1 is a 5" smartphone with 1,280 x 768 display and 1.5 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6732 64-bit processor and 1 GB of RAM.

The screen is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is pretty durable. The M1 has an 8 GB internal storage and can be expanded via Micro SD card up to 128 GB.

     

The main camera is a 13 MP snapper capable for 1080p video recording, while the front-facing unit is a 5 MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture.

Juicing up the device is a 2,610 mAh battery, considering huge in its class. The M1 measures at 8.9 mm and weighs 128 g. It is running on Flyme 4 OS and will be available in white, blue, yellow, green, pink and light blue. You can expect to see it in Malaysia soon alongside with the M1 Note.

1.3 billion smartphones shipped in 2014; Xiaomi ends year ranked 5th globally

2014 was a blockbuster year for smartphones, with 1.3 billion shipped in 2014, says the latest data from IDC. That’s up 27.6 percent from the 1.02 billion figure in 2013.

The final quarter of the year, Q4 2014, saw a total of 375.2 million smartphones shipped out, which is up 28.2 percent from Q4 2013.

The big news is that Apple came amazingly close to toppling Samsung’s statue. Xiaomi remains in the global top five, though it dropped a couple of positions:

• 1st – Samsung remains the market leader, but now it’s by a very slim margin. IDC says Apple has narrowed the gap to a mere 600,000 units in Q4, compared to Samsung’s monster lead of more than 33 million units in the same period a year before. The Korean giant shipped 75.1 million smartphones in Q4, in IDC’s own data.
• 2nd – Apple is booming thanks to the larger iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The company revealed in its earnings report earlier this week that it sold 74.5 million iPhones in Q4, which is a record high.
• 3rd -Lenovo is, says the IDC crew, “a distant third in the fourth quarter, narrowly edging out Huawei thanks to the completion of the Motorola acquisition earlier in the quarter.” It seems Lenovo would be fourth if Motorola’s shipments were not clumped together with Lenovo’s in this confusing way.
• 4th -Huawei is now back in the top five after a strong 2014. The company will reveal a sales figure for the year soon. Going into 2015, Huawei plans to focus on mid-range and high-end phones.
• 5th – Xiaomi sold 61 million phones in 2014, according to its own data. Despite that record high, Xiaomi dropped from third to fifth in the global shipments rankings.
• 6th – LG shipped 59.1 million smartphones in 2014, the company revealed this week.

“Samsung’s challenges have not only come from Apple, but also from the increasing number of low-cost Android OEMs that are putting out products at much lower margins,” notes the report. That’s exemplified in China by Xiaomi, whose US$320 Mi4 phone matches or beats Samsung’s high-end US$800 phones on specifications and looks. In India, homegrown brands like Micromax are also stepping up their game and beefing up their phones in order to tackle Samsung – and also fend off Xiaomi as it enters new markets.

Kids Under 13 Spend Around 2 Hours a Day Playing Mobile and Tablet Games, According to NPD Group Study

If you think you’re playing too much on your tablet or phone, you should have a look at the latest study from NPD Group. That study shows that kids under 13 spend as much as 2 hours a day playing mobile games.

The survey was conducted between November 24th and December 5th 2014 and included responses from 5566 individuals, aged 2 and older. NPD found that the amount of time spend gaming on a mobile device has grown 57% compared to two years ago. For respondents under 18, a parent helped the child complete the survey or completed it for them. The gamers who spent the most time playing were those in the 2 to 12 year old age group.

This means that parents are offering them portable gadgets quite early in their life. Meanwhile, the same 2 to 12 year old age group is a big cash cow, the second biggest generator of revenue for mobile game makers. The first one is the segment of people aged 30 to 44, since they spend more. Interestingly enough, most of the surveyed people also own consoles and in spite of that, they still play quite a bit on their mobile.

Jolla Tablet Gets New Indiegogo Project

Jolla made a great first impression, as a team of passionate developers that left old Nokia with their Meego hopes and dreams crushed. They then created Sailfish OS and late in 2014 unveiled the Jolla tablet, funded via Indiegogo. The company needed $380.000 for production to start and they reached that goal in hours. Now they started a new campaign for a 64 GB Jolla Tablet.

The previous campaign ended in December 2014, with $1.8 million raised in pledges. An important thing to mention is that the specs also got bumped on this occasion, with the new slate. Aside from getting that extra storage, the new Jolla Tablet has a bigger battery, with a capacity of 4450 mAh, instead of the previous 4300 mAh. There’s also limited support for external storage via microSD cards.

To make it clearer, users will be able to rely on microSD cards only to back up content and there are limitations here. For example, microSD cards that are over 32 GB and have been formated to use with Jolla won’t be read by a Windows PC or other devices, including cameras or phones. The new model also has the proximity sensor removed and the display is now laminated.
