Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 updated to Android Lollipop

It has been known for a while now that the Samsung Galaxy S4 would eventually be updated to Lollipop. Since the announcement, the Galaxy S4 has seen slow progress with theupdate first landing in Russia and India, then seeing a few European countries, and now the US is finally starting to receive Lollipop as well. AT&T and T-Mobile’s variants have already received the update and this week customers who own the Galaxy S4 on Verizon will also see the latest sweet treat.

The update pushes the Galaxy S4 to Android 5.0.1, and like most of Samsung’s other devices to receive Lollipop, the update includes a slightly tweaked Touchwiz UI that better matches Google’s Material Design, though the aesthetic changes aren’t nearly as noticeable as what you’d find in a stock Android device. The Samsung apps have gotten lighter with a white background and colours to match those seen in the latest Galaxy handsets. This update is also supposed to bring performance enhancements and possibly longer battery life.

If you have received this update, feel free to leave your impressions down in the comments.

LG Leon LTE and LG G Stylo are making their way to T-Mobile this spring

Earlier today T-Mobile announced that it would carry the brand new LG G4 starting in June, but that’s not the only new LG device making its way to the carrier’s lineup. T-Mobile will also carry the LG G Stylo phablet and LG Leon LTE starting sometime this spring. So far there is very little information regarding when the two handsets will come to the carrier or how much they’ll cost, but T-Mobile says it will have more information for us in the future.

More great LG devices

Announced less than a week ago, the LG G Stylo is a new mid-range device that boasts decent specifications for the price point. It has a 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1280, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and MicroSD expansion up to 128GB. Additionally, it’s running Android 5.0 Lollipop, has an 8MP rear camera, 5MP front camera and a 3000mAh battery. Of course, it also has a rubber-tipped stylus, which works in conjunction with the software features LG incorporated into Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Also making its way to the Un-carrier is the LG Leon LTE, a small device that was announced back at MWC 2015 a few months ago. We went hands-on with this device and three others, and you can check out our full first impressions post here.

The Leon LTE has a 4.5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 854 × 480, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of on-board storage and MicroSD expansion up to 32GB. It’s also running Android 5.0 Lollipop, has a 5MP rear-facing camera, a VGA front camera and a removable 1900mAh battery. The handset may not be the best on the market, but considering you’ll get a 4G LTE-capable device running Android 5.0 Lollipop for a very small price tag, we think you could do much worse than this one.

We’ll be sure to update you as we hear more about these two handsets.

LG G4 is alone: Is a removable battery still a must have feature for you?

We are now four months into the year and have already seen a number of flagship devices from HTCSonySamsung, and Huawei. All of these phones have numerous differences that set them apart, but at least one thing in common: they don’t offer user-replaceable batteries.

Samsung has long been one of the last bastions of hope for those looking for power user features like removable batteries and microSD. For a while it seemed likely that both of these traditional smartphone features would go the way of the dinosaur, with many major OEMs like LG, HTC, and Motorola moving away from supporting these options. Thankfully, the trend towards ditching microSD has slowed, with HTC jumping back on the microSD train with the One M8 and LG with the LG G3. The same can’t be said for removable batteries.

This leaves the LG G4 as the sole option for those who want a major 2015 flagship with support for removable batteries.

Removable batteries are increasingly less common, with Samsung devices and the LG G3 some of the only major flagships in 2014 to offer user-removable batteries. Now fast-forwarding to 2015, Samsung has ironically dropped support for removable backs, batteries, and microSD with its Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge flagships. This leaves the LG G4 as the sole option for those who want a major 2015 flagship with support for removable batteries. Sure, there are likely a number of mid-rangers or lesser known devices with the feature even today, but the bigger players in the industry just don’t seem to care about removable backs anymore.

With battery demands increasing with QHD displays and quad, octa and hex-core processors, it seems a bit odd that we’ve reached a point where removable backs and batteries are now quite a rarity. It still remains unseen how the rest of 2015 will play out and whether the Note 5 will follow the GS6’s footsteps but we have to ask — do you still care? Is a removable battery a nice ‘extra’ for you as a consumer, or an absolute must have? Let us know what you think in the poll below.

I didn’t think any company would do that. Onda has skipped the X-series of Atoms here. And notice they’re calling it an Ultrabook, not a tablet. Yet recycling the V919 designation — to confuse the hell out of everyone.
Separately, smaller SOFIA CPU-based tablets:

Now that Onda has done a Core-M-based 4:3 tablet, will CUBE, Teclast, Five Technology, and others offer one too?

Samsung’s rebranding to Galaxy is total in Japan

Galaxy S6 Edge: Global Model

Earlier this month, we took a look at the recent Samsung rebranding situation that has occurred in Japan: the OEM’s logo was nowhere to be seen on any of the promotional material for the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge, nor could it be found anywhere on the devices themselves. In the weeks that followed, the story was picked up by not only Korean mediasources, but the Japanese media as well, not to mention countless tech sites.

While Samsung has only offered commentary to the effect of the name game being a desire to market the “Galaxy” brand, the problem is largely seen to be one of market share in Japan:

[IMG] Counterpoint

Since the original story, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have released, and suffice to say, the rebranding issue is far larger than it initially appeared. First, let’s take a look at the in-store “Galaxy Store” pop-up corners that exists in Japan:

(1) Note all the Samsung branded products on the shelf.
(2) The Galaxy is everywhere.
(3) Galaxy products on display.
(4) Notice all the purple boxes on the racks: all official Samsung cases but without any branding.

The first image (1) is an example of the prior incarnation of the Galaxy Store. While the Samsung logo wasn’t exactly prominent, it could still be found on all product accessories, and on the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab S units and such on display. The next picture (2) shows the current design. The colors have been changed, and the new Galaxy logo is everywhere. The third picture (3) shows the product display: at the store this image was taken at (Yodobashi Camera Shinjuku), all prior Samsung products have been removed entirely. The final picture (4) shows the Accessory Corner.

Curiously enough, the only place the Samsung name actually appears is on the unsold old Accessory merchandise. These can be seen in the second picture (2) just below the giant orange “au” logo. One might assume these products are there only because devices like the Note Edge and various Galaxy Gear devices are still being sold by carriers (such as “au”).

Moving on, let’s compare the official cases:

Just for reference purposes, images (1) and (2) show the official Samsung Japan Galaxy Note Edge Flip Wallet; note the Samsung logo is present on both the packaging and the actual accessory itself. The next pair of images (3-4) show the international Galaxy S6 Edge Flip Wallet: note the presence of the Samsung logo on the packaging as well as the accessory. Also note the manufacturing information in picture (3) clearly indicates Samsung.

Images (5-7) show the Japanese Galaxy S6 Edge Flip Wallet. Note the removal of the Samsung logo and redesigned packaging. Image (6) in particular is interesting for it simply lists a “Galaxy Customer Center” for customer support; nothing of Samsung. The final image (7) shows how the actual branding on the case has also been altered.

Finally, let’s move onto packaging:

(1) Japanese Galaxy Note Edge box

The left image is shown for reference: the standard Galaxy S6 Edge box with Samsung branding. The center image (1) shows the Japanese Galaxy Note Edge box which, despite the phone itself being devoid of Samsung’s logo, still used the company’s name on the box. The right image (3) is the Japanese Galaxy S6 Edge box, complete with the OEM’s name removed.

Finally, take a look at a video from Samsung Japan’s rebranded YouTube page:

The publisher has been rebranded as “Galaxy Mobile Japan”. Not exactly surprising given the previous topics covered, but still good indication of just how all-inclusive this decision has been. Also worth pointing out: the company’s Facebook page, as well as its Twitter account, also reflect the change.

Wrap Up

With this bold new direction, it remains to be seen just what will happen to Samsung’s Japan market share in the coming months. The rebranding, coupled with the release of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, might just be enough to change the tide in the Korean giant’s favor. Bolstering the potential is the appointment of a new COO last week, as well as the fact that no new domestic (Japanese) mobile phones have released in the past few months that might otherwise deter sales. Even the controversial Sony Xperia Z4 has yet to receive a release date.

While the decision to market everything as “Galaxy” in Japan might come across as a shock, consider that Samsung doesn’t have any other mainstream consumer products for sale in the Land of the Rising Sun. No computers, no printers, no televisions, no refrigerators… the Galaxy products are, for all intents and purposes, all it has to offer. With this in mind, it will be quite interesting to see what is to become of the upcoming Galaxy Gear VR, which will actually release in Japan on May 1st.
