First Video: Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0

A Russian-language video has been posted to YouTube touring the new eight-inch Galaxy Tab A. It also provides an AnTuTu score.

Dig this:

A score in the 22,000-range. All things being equal — which they generally aren’t, but still — this is a tablet that seems equivalent to a circa-2013 Rockchip 3188 one from Chuwi. With Samsung-level pricing!

What is wrong over at Samsung? Don’t they know Russians will be able to buy a Rockchip 3288-based Vidaa Pad (likely under another brand name) for less with far more computing power and a Retina-class screen? Does Samsung make decisions within a self-reflective bubble that disregards the outside world? It would seem so!

I’m not even going to mention the Acer Iconia A1-830, which is currently US$129 at Best Buy (with probably a similar price in Europe) and likely has a superior camera. But oops! I just did.

At least Samsung doesn’t seem to be cheating at AnTuTu this time.

Clawing their way to relevancy, Microsoft has dumped a folder-load of apps onto the tablet:

It otherwise seems to lack the ferocious and cloggy bloat of their TouchWiz UI. At least Samsung has avoided that mistake.

I’m beginning to wonder if the design of this A-series tablet will be shared by the upper-tier ones with Samsung’s (or Qualcomm’s) octa-core CPU. Are the shells to be the same, just with different computing guts?

And what’s going on here, really? Apple sued the hell out of Samsung over the Galaxy Tab 7.7, an 7.7-inch tablet with a 4:3 screen. A restraining order got it pulled from a trade show and Samsung more or less quickly orphaned the tablet.

Now the design is legal? Such legal inconsistencies make my head spin. But then, Apple didn’t sue Acer over the A1-830, so there’s that.
