Chinese video portal LeTV confirms it will make an electric car

Just a few days ago, we noted some new legislation that would make it easier for internet companies like Xiaomi to produce and sell electric cars. And although Xiaomi’s car still resides firmly in the realm of rumor, another internet company – LeTV – has already announced plans to take to the road.

Undaunted by his company’s foundation in online video, LeTV CEO Jia Yueting has been pushed his company to expand into hardware with smart TVs, and today on Weibo he announced the company will be making an electric car, too. The project is called SEE – short for Super Electric Eco-system – and Jia says it will “redefine vehicles through entirely independent R&D and continue the successful vertical integration model of the LeTV Eco-system [sic].”

If that’s not ambitious enough for you, he also writes: “We look to overtake the traditional European, American, Japanese and Korean giants of the industry, eventually addressing urban smog and traffic problems and enabling everyone on earth to drive a #Super Car# and breathe clean air.”

Details about the car are scarce. The image above is the only one yet released, and it doesn’t say much. However, Jia’s post also included an image of smog-clouded Beijing, and strongly suggests that the car will include some kind of air filtration feature in addition to its electric engine.

We’ve contacted LeTV for more information about the vehicle.
